Dear Brothers and Sisters,

With registration for the upcoming school year upon us, some parishioners may qualify for the “Active Catholic” reduced tuition rate, and I gladly accept these requests. Below are the areas that we review in making a decision to approve requests for the Active Catholic discount. Those families who meet these minimum areas of registration, regular attendance, and financial support, will be eligible for the discounted tuition rate.

Registration

The custodial parent/guardian of the child is registered as a parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas as recorded in our parish database for a minimum of three months.

Regular Attendance

“The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.” (CCC 2181) It is our hope that parents are particularly aware of this teaching of the Church, as they have solemnly promised God to raise their children accordingly to the law of Christ and His Church. Since evidence of attendance at Sunday Mass is difficult to ascertain, we ask that families demonstrate attendance at Sunday Mass by participating in the parish envelope system. Using envelopes are also a wonderful way to model stewardship to your children. To be considered as someone who regularly attends Sunday Mass, the receipt of at least two envelopes per month is requested. Those families who participate in auto-tithe are asked to also place an envelope in the collection at least twice a month. This envelope may be empty, as the financial support is provided electronically.

Financial Support

The idea behind the tuition discount to active and contributing parishioners is that they are already financially supporting the parish by way of the Sunday collection. The biblical tradition of a tithe being 10% of one’s income is a revered custom and an excellent guidepost. However, the level of financial support may vary from family to family depending on circumstances. As an absolute minimum for consideration for a reduced tuition rate, the parish asks that a family’s financial support equal or exceed $8 per week ($400 annually). If you have any questions, or there is anything else we may help you with, please call the office. We are here to assist you.

Truly in Christ,

Fr. Muir
